Hand Pruners

Hand pruners, also called pruning shears, pruning scissors, or secateurs, are designed to precision cut small branches, stems, and flowers up to about three quarters of an inch. Bypass pruners slice like scissors for clean cuts on living wood; anvil pruners close onto a flat plate to power through dry, dead wood. Most gardeners end up wanting one of each.

Which hand pruner is right for you?
Model Type Best for
Pro Series Forged Bypass Pruner Bypass Daily professional pruning. Forged, geared, and built to be maintained for years.
Super Duty MaxForce Bypass Pruner Bypass Cuts up to 3/4" with gear-assisted power, the most cutting muscle in the class.
Heavy Duty Bypass Pruner Bypass The all-around workhorse for clean cuts on green stems up to 5/8".
Heavy Duty Anvil Pruner Anvil Deadwood up to 5/8". The crushing cut that powers through dry, brittle stems.
Compact Duralight Pruner Bypass Smaller hands and lighter work, with the same 5/8" capacity in a lighter frame.
Regular Duty Bypass Pruner Bypass Light everyday pruning and deadheading, rated to 5/8".

If the handles spread wider than your relaxed grip, size down to the Compact; if you feel yourself twisting through cuts, size up a tier or move to loppers. Our guide to tree pruning tools by branch size covers the full handoff from pruner to lopper to saw.
