Tips for Preparing Your Garden in Spring

Posted by Woodland Tools Co. on 28th Apr 2023

Spring is the perfect time to prepare your garden for the upcoming growing season so you can dig in, get dirty, and create something beautiful in your outdoor spaces. As the weather starts to warm up, plants are waking up from their winter snooze. With an inventory of Woodland Tools at your disposal and a drive to empower yourself with the knowledge and tools to experience the joy of gardening, keep these tips in mind as you plan your projects for the year ahead.

Clean Up Your Garden Beds

The first step in preparing your garden for spring is to clean up your garden beds by removing any dead leaves, branches, or debris that may have accumulated over the winter. Also, take note to rake out any fallen leaves or debris that may be hiding around your plants as well. This will help to improve the soil's appearance, and it also provides a clean area for establishing new plants.

Our scratch tools collection, which includes our hori hori garden knife, trowel, cultivator, transplanter, and weeder, is the perfect resource to ensure your garden will be beautiful and thriving in no time. And, if you’re constructing a new garden or if you must deal with heavy overgrowth, our machetes and brush axe are the heavy-duty clearing tools you’ll need for a fresh start.

Prepare the Soil

Once you've cleaned up your garden beds, it's time to prepare your soil for planting. Start by testing your soil to determine what nutrients it may be lacking with a soil test kit that you can find in your local garden center. You could also send a soil sample to a lab for testing if you’re one to go the extra mile. Once you know what your soil needs, you can add organic matter, such as compost, aged manure, and lime to improve the soil's quality and adjust PH levels.

Prune Shrubs and Trees

Spring is also a great time to prune your shrubs and trees, and regular pruning will help to shape your plants and encourage healthy growth. You can prune off any dead or damaged branches, as well as any branches that are crossing or rubbing against each other. Be sure to use sharp pruning shears to make clean cuts and avoid tearing the plant's bark.

With our collection of durable and ergonomic hand pruners, loppers, and tree pruners, Woodland Tools has you covered as you cut small branches, stems, shrubs, perennial flowers, trees, or plants to prepare your garden for spring. Some of our products are also extendable, providing you with the ability to easily reach those otherwise hard-to-reach branches.

Divide and Transplant Perennials

If you have perennials in your garden, you may need to divide them to keep them healthy and to prevent overcrowding. Dig up the plant and then use a sharp knife to divide it into smaller sections. Be sure to replant the divided sections at the same depth as the original plant, and keep in mind that you can also transplant perennials to a new location in your garden if needed.

Start Seedlings Indoors

If you're planning on growing your vegetables or annuals from seed, spring is the ideal time to start your seedlings indoors. You can start them in small pots or trays, and then transplant them into your garden once the weather warms up. When it’s time to transplant, make sure to have our heavy duty hori hori knife at the ready! During this process, remember two things: keep the seedlings in a warm and sunny location and water them regularly.

Plant Cool-Season Crops

Spring is also a great time to plant cool-season crops, such as peas, spinach, and lettuce. These plants can easily tolerate cooler temperatures and will thrive in the springtime weather, just be sure to plant them in a location that receives plenty of sunlight and has well-draining soil.

Mulch your Garden

Finally, be sure to add a layer of mulch to your garden beds. Mulch will help to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. A variety of materials can be used for mulching, including straw, shredded leaves, or wood chips. Apply a layer that's at least 2-3 inches thick to ensure strong plant growth and prevent pesky weeds.

Preparing your garden for spring is essential for a successful growing season, and Woodland Tools lets you work smarter, not harder, with our line of tools that are built to last.
